Stoma Care Awareness

This course is designed for UK adult social care workers (care assistants, senior care workers, domiciliary care workers, support workers, and personal assistants) who may support an adult with a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy in home care, supported living, or care home settings. It is especially relevant where stoma support is delivered as a delegated healthcare activity, meaning a regulated healthcare professional (for example, a nurse) delegates a healthcare activity to a care worker or personal assistant, under clear conditions, supervision, and local policy.

What you'll learn

Define common stoma types (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy).
Describe the purpose of stoma appliances (for example, one-piece vs two-piece systems).
Explain why person-centred care, dignity, privacy, and lawful consent are essential in stoma support in adult social care settings.
Follow a care plan and local policy to support routine stoma care activities (for example, assisting with emptying, basic skin checks, safe waste disposal), using standard infection prevention precautions.

Course content

5 modules

This module establishes what stoma care means in adult social care, what tasks may be “supportive care” vs “delegated clinical activity,” and how to work legally and safely with consent, dignity, and person-centred planning. It also sets the safety rule: if you are not trained/authorized/competent for a task in your setting, you must not proceed, escalate and follow the care plan.
This module provides the minimum clinical foundation a social care worker needs: the main types of stoma, common appliance systems, and everyday observations that matter (output patterns, fit, skin condition), without turning the learner into a clinician. It anchors to the reality that stoma services are nurse-led and that care workers must know when to involve specialist support.
This module focuses on safe day-to-day support: standard precautions, PPE decisions, assisting someone with emptying/changing according to the care plan, peristomal skin observation, and waste disposal. It treats infection prevention as a core skill in adult social care, not an add-on.
This module builds the decision-making needed to keep people safe: recognizing red flags, acting early, and documenting clearly so the wider system (stoma nurse service, GP, district nursing) can respond. It emphasizes dehydration and obstruction warning signs and provides an escalation script that care workers can use under pressure.
