Epilepsy Awareness

Epilepsy is a brain condition defined by repeated seizures. Seizures can present in different ways, from convulsions to brief episodes of altered awareness or unusual movements/sensations. In social care, your role is not to diagnose. Your role is to: recognise possible seizure activity, keep the person safe with appropriate first aid, follow the person’s care plan if available and if you are trained/authorised to do so, escalate promptly when thresholds are met, record and communicate the event appropriately.

Course content

6 modules

Develop a clear understanding of epilepsy, seizures and common misconceptions. This module explores how stigma can affect people’s wellbeing and shows how respectful communication, dignity, privacy and person-centred support help people live confidently and independently.
Learn how different types of seizures may appear in everyday care settings. This module helps learners observe, time and describe seizure activity accurately, recognise changes from a person’s usual pattern and report concerns without attempting to diagnose.
Build the practical knowledge needed to respond safely and calmly during a seizure. Learners will cover essential first-aid steps, unsafe actions to avoid, recovery support and the key situations in which emergency assistance must be requested.
Explore how everyday support can reduce seizure-related risks while protecting choice and independence. This module covers medication routines, seizure monitoring, safer daily activities, night-time risks and sensitive awareness of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).
Understand the legal and professional responsibilities involved in supporting people with epilepsy. Learners will explore consent, mental capacity, confidentiality, safeguarding, reasonable adjustments and the importance of clear, accurate and timely documentation.
This final assessment checks learners’ understanding of epilepsy awareness, seizure recognition, first aid, risk reduction, SUDEP, legal responsibilities and documentation. A range of question types is used to assess knowledge and its application in adult social care situations.
